Support New EV Charging in Minehead
We are excited to introduce you to our proposals for a new electric vehicle (EV) charging station located in Minehead.
There are currently only 16 EV chargers in Minehead, many of which are slow 7KW/50KW chargers. As the usage of EV cars increases further, high-speed chargers will be needed. Please click the button below to show your support for our proposals.

We have included some text in the form, but it’s even better if you tell Somerset Council why Minehead needs a new EV Hub in your own words.
•Minehead EV Hub will meet an existing and identified future need for EV users in Minehead and surrounding areas.
•Encourages Tourism – As a popular destination with Butlins and the nearby National Park, reliable EV charging will make Minehead more accessible for visitors.
•Reduces Carbon Emissions – Encouraging EV use aligns with sustainability goals and helps improve air quality in the area.
•Addresses Charging Gaps – Minehead currently has very few public charging points. This hub will fill a crucial gap.
•Convenient & Fast Charging – The hub will provide rapid charging, making it much quicker and easier for EV drivers to top up their batteries.
•Improves Accessibility for Residents – Many local homes, especially flats or properties without driveways, can’t install home chargers. Public charging is essential for them.
The national need
The sale of electric cars is surging, with a 186% increase in 2020 alone. More electric cars were sold in the past year than in the previous five years combined.
In 2024, electric vehicles accounted for 19.6% of all new car registrations, a figure that continues to rise. However, charging infrastructure is failing to keep pace. It is critical to swiftly develop fast, convenient, and accessible charging facilities across the country. Many residential properties, such as apartments or homes without driveways or garages, are unsuitable for home charging.
Additionally, only a small number of homes can support fast charging infrastructure above 7kW. As a result, electric vehicle owners will increasingly rely on public charging locations, such as the proposed facility in Minehead.
Does Minehead need an EV HuB
Minehead currently has only 16 individual EV chargers, with only 2 high speed (120KW) chargers. The proposed EV Hub aims to improve access to faster, more efficient charging with the introduction of 8 ultra-fast 150kW chargers, capable of charging vehicles in 15-30 minutes.
By providing a mix of charging options, the hub will help meet increasing demand and support the transition to electric vehicles in the area.
Minehead EV Hub will also meet the unique demand for long-distance car travel to Butlins and Exmoor National Park, helping to encourage sustainable travel options.
About Minehead EV Hub
The proposed Minehead EV Hub will be located on the A39 (see adjacent map) at the entrance to Minehead, with vehicle access via Ellicombe Lane. Customer parking will be provided in line with Somerset Council’s standards.
At present, Minehead has only 16 individual EV chargers, most of which are slow chargers requiring several hours for a full charge.
Proposal Overview:
• 8 ultra-fast 150kW EV chargers, capable of charging vehicles in 15-30 minutes.
•2 regular speed chargers, capable of charging vehicles in 30-60 minutes
•3 traditional fuelling pumps to support existing fuel needs. These will be transitioned out in response to changing consumer demand.
•A small shop, serving both customers and the local community.
•Costa Coffee, providing a convenient stop for travellers and residents.

Minehead EV Hub will be sensitively designed, blending seamlessly with its surroundings while incorporating the latest in sustainable materials. It will set the benchmark for eco-friendly infrastructure, ensuring minimal environmental impact.
